Lowey to Boehner: Keep Iran Off Continuing Resolution
Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, today issued the following statement on Speaker Boehner’s refusal to rule out adding language on the JCPOA to an upcoming Continuing Resolution:
“With a mere seven legislative days remaining before another pointless and damaging government shutdown, it is astounding that Republican leadership is still entertaining attaching poison pill riders to a Continuing Resolution.
“As one of the few House Democrats who opposes the JCPOA, I also believe including language stopping the Iran deal in an upcoming spending bill would be the height of irresponsibility. It stands no chance of being signed into law and wastes already dwindling time.
“The JCPOA is one of the most consequential and serious issues on which Members of Congress will ever have to vote. Between the haphazard process for considering the agreement and prospect of using it as a political sideshow in a spending bill, I am highly disappointed Republican leadership is not treating the issue with the seriousness it deserves.
“I desperately urge Speaker Boehner to get a grip on the most extreme elements of his conference and resist shutting down the government over Iran, Planned Parenthood, the Confederate Flag, or any other issue. Work with Democrats to prevent another pointless and damaging government shutdown and pave the way for spending bills that invest responsibly in our future.”
